Understanding Catnip: Fundamentals and Benefits for Cats

Looking to add some harmless excitement to your cat’s day? Yes, we’re talking about Catnip! Perhaps you’ve already noticed it and were perplexed by the reaction of your cat. It’s a fascinating plant that impacts the behaviour of cats and makes them go into a frenzy. But how does it work, and is it really safe? Let’s find out.

In this blog, we’ll explore the fundamentals of catnip and the benefits it offers to your feline friend. Moreover, we’ll cover some of the popular uses of catnip.

Get ready to uncover the secrets of catnip!

What is Catnip?

Nepetacataria, popularly known as catnip, catmint, or catswort, is a common herb that is native to southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of China. Hailing from the mint family, this lemony herb appeals to almost all members of the cat family, including tigers, lions, and panthers.

Cats and Catnips: The Love Story

You must be wondering why catnip appeals to cats or what catnip actually does to cats. Let’s explore this:

Catnip contains a type of chemical terpene (a volatile oil), known as nepetalactone. This oil is found in the plant’s leaves and stems and can cause behavioural changes in cats. But how?

Cats have a scent gland called the vomeronasal gland in the roof of their mouth, which helps them discriminate between two similar smells. When cats interact (sniffing, licking, or eating) with catnip, they are exposed to the nepetalactonepresent in it, which stimulates the “happy receptors” in the cat’s head. Essentially, it triggers a stimulant effect, mimicking the pheromones associated with mating.

However, the behavioural reaction depends on the cat, as each cat reacts differently. Some of the reactions include:

  • Licking, sniffing, and increased appetite
  • Rolling and scratching
  • Relaxation and snuggling
  • Playfulness or aggression

How Long Does the Catnip Effect Last?

The length of the catnip effect depends on the cat, and typically it lasts for 5 to 15 minutes and then wears off gradually. Once the effect has worn off, cats become temporarily immune to the effects of catnip for around 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Benefits of Catnip for Cats

Catnip offers a number of benefits for cats. Let’s look at some of them in this segment:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: Catnip can promote calmness, which can help reduce stress levels in your cat. It is especially beneficial for cats that are prone to stress and anxiety. You can also add catnip to their bath, making it more relaxing and soothing.
  • Provides stimulation: Cats depict different behavioural reactions when they smell the nepetalactone in catnip. It triggers stimulation in their brain, encouraging activity and playfulness, which is good for killing boredom.
  • Aids in training: You can give it as a reward for favourable behaviour you want to induce in your cat. For instance, it can be used to train them to stand still for vaccination, avoid scratching, trim their claws, and more.
  • Used as an insect repellent: The active ingredient in catnip works well to repel mosquitoes and flies. So, it can also be used as an insect repellent.
  • Anti-inflammation: Catnip has anti-inflammatory properties and can aid in soothing your cat’s joint pain.

How to Use Catnip?

Catnip can be used in varied scenarios and is available in different forms:

  • Fresh catnip
  • Dried catnip
  • Catnip sprays
  • Wands and teasers
  • Interactive toys

You can easily grow your own catnip plant or get catnip spray, toys, or teasers to make playtime more fun and engaging for your cat. Experiment with different forms to see which your cat prefers, and always monitor their reaction to ensure they enjoy it safely.

Is Catnip Safe for Cats?

The plant is non-toxic and safe even if your cat eats it. Catnip does impact the cat’s brain but doesn’t have any long-term effects and is not addictive. However, it’s recommended to use catnip in moderation and with supervision or as per directions from your vet.
